# The Developer Marketing Guide

> Developer marketing skills from the Heavybit library: launches, positioning, content, DevRel and community. Read the overview, then run each skill in your AI agent over MCP.

6 skills from the Heavybit library cover launches, positioning, content, DevRel and community. Each one is built from talks, podcasts and articles by the operators who did the work. Read the overview here, then run the skill in Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT or any MCP client.

## How these skills work

Each skill takes what operators have said about one marketing job, such as a launch, a positioning rewrite or a community program, and turns it into instructions an AI agent can follow. Your agent asks about your product and audience, works through the decisions with you, and names the practitioners and library pieces behind its advice.

## Set it up once

1. In Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT or another MCP client, add a new MCP server with the address below.
2. When the client opens a sign-in window, log in to Heavybit with Google or GitHub. The account is free.
3. Tell your agent what you're working on, such as a launch or a first meetup, or name a skill. It loads the right one itself.

## Marketing and launch

- [Product Marketing for Developers](https://www.devmarketingguide.com/skills/product-marketing-developers.md): Plan launches, build a funnel for developers, and set up product marketing as the company grows.
- [Messaging & Positioning](https://www.devmarketingguide.com/skills/messaging-positioning.md): Say what your product does in words developers trust, test it, and get every team telling the same story.
- [Content Marketing Strategy](https://www.devmarketingguide.com/skills/content-marketing-strategy.md): Plan technical content that ranks, leads into the product, and earns trust with engineers.

## Developer relations and community

- [Developer Communities](https://www.devmarketingguide.com/skills/developer-communities.md): Decide what community you need, then run it: health metrics, champions, meetups and events.
- [DevRel Strategy](https://www.devmarketingguide.com/skills/devrel-strategy.md): Structure a DevRel team, pick its tactics, and show what it does for the business.
- [Developer Onboarding & Documentation](https://www.devmarketingguide.com/skills/developer-onboarding-documentation.md): Treat docs and the first hour with your product as marketing, and measure whether they work.

## Community events

The Developer Communities skill draws on Heavybit's meetup series and four years of running virtual developer events. Ask your agent to plan a meetup with it and it works from these pieces.

## Where this guide started

The Developer Marketing Guide first went up in 2015 around three Heavybit talks: essential content types with Danielle Morrill, distribution plans with Craig Kerstiens, and community projects and retargeting with John Sheehan. The skills here pick up from there with a decade more of the Heavybit library behind them.
